Warnings and Precautions when using Codeine
Opioids and narcotic analgesics act on the central nervous system to relieve pain.
When narcotics are used over a long period of time, the body becomes used to the narcotic
and begins to require more of the drug to achieve the same relief. It is generally recommended
(for safety) to NOT exceed 200mg of codeine daily and also to avoid alcohol.
The prescribing physician may of course indicate a different recommended dosage based on
the medical history and condition suffered by the patient.
Narcotics are habit forming if used for long periods of time (several weeks), they cause both
physical and mental dependence. As a result of physical dependence, they may cause
withdrawal symptoms when the medication is stopped abruptly.
Combination medicines containing opioids (narcotic analgesics) + acetaminophen/paracetamol
and other drugs may provide better pain relief than either medication used alone.
Side Effects of Codeine
The most frequently observed adverse reactions include light headedness, dizziness, sedation,
shortness of breath, nausea and vomiting. Other adverse reactions include allergic reactions,
euphoria, dysphoria, constipation, abdominal pain and pruritis. At higher doses, codeine has
most of the disadvantages of morphine including respiratory depression.
Overdose
If suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.
Symptoms of overdose may include cold and clammy skin, slowed breathing, slowed heartbeat,
drowsiness, dizziness, light headedness, deep sleep and loss of consciousness.
